We Challenge Conventional Wisdom

This is one of MOM’s 4 company values.

This weekend, The Wife and I found ourselves with not much going on (my favorite kind of weekend!). So, we got to doing some projects, one of which was cleaning out one of our kids’ rooms. We came across a Christmas ornament of a Misfit Toy- from The Island of Misfit Toys.

It got me to thinking about how I, and I think many of us who are passionate about changing the world, feel like misfits- that we aren’t in the mainstream.

I’m a big fan of the rock band Rush. Many who work here at MOM’s are fans of the Grateful Dead. If you’ve ever been to either one of these concerts, you know how during those few hours you feel bonded and connected to the thousands of other misfits who surround you (nerds @ Rush or hippies @ the Dead). You are reminded that while you may be different, you are not alone.

MOM’s employees, customers, and suppliers understand the value of organic foods. We feel a sense of urgency to protect and restore the environment. We deplore social injustice. Here at MOM’s, I’m lucky in that I get to feel connected every day- constantly reminded that I am not alone with my world-view. This brings me joy and, more important, I feel empowered…

The misfits’ anthem…

Growing up it all seems so one-sided
Opinions all provided
The future pre-decided
Detached and subdivided
In the mass production zone
Nowhere is the dreamer
Or the misfit so alone
Conform or be cast out…
