This is one of MOM’s 4 company values.
This weekend, The Wife and I found ourselves with not much going on (my favorite kind of weekend!). So, we got to doing some projects, one of which was cleaning out one of our kids’ rooms. We came across a Christmas ornament of a Misfit Toy- from The Island of Misfit Toys.
It got me to thinking about how I, and I think many of us who are passionate about changing the world, feel like misfits- that we aren’t in the mainstream.
I’m a big fan of the rock band Rush. Many who work here at MOM’s are fans of the Grateful Dead. If you’ve ever been to either one of these concerts, you know how during those few hours you feel bonded and connected to the thousands of other misfits who surround you (nerds @ Rush or hippies @ the Dead). You are reminded that while you may be different, you are not alone.
MOM’s employees, customers, and suppliers understand the value of organic foods. We feel a sense of urgency to protect and restore the environment. We deplore social injustice. Here at MOM’s, I’m lucky in that I get to feel connected every day- constantly reminded that I am not alone with my world-view. This brings me joy and, more important, I feel empowered…
The misfits’ anthem…
Growing up it all seems so one-sided
Opinions all provided
The future pre-decided
Detached and subdividedIn the mass production zone
Nowhere is the dreamer
Or the misfit so alone
Conform or be cast out…
Scott – Yes, I feel the same way when I’m at any of your stores! A good group of people and great products!
MOMs supported the Georgetown TEDx program on food this Saturday, didn’t they?
We made it to that, in fact, my wife spoke about our CSA! http://www.freshandlocalcsa.com (which MOMs has also been very supportive of )
Anyway, while we activists rue the fact that such a wonderful event essentially turned out to once again be a ‘speaking to the choir’ event, the sense of community was overwhelming.
I hope I can breakaway to more sustainable ag/enviro events this coming season!
Of course, I get to MOMs once (or more!!) a week!
The battles are won in the trenches, Allan. I appreciate and support all small organic farmers who are at the forefront of this movement!
Thanks for this – I needed the reminder today.
i love it
your good
Hi Scott,
Bob Vosburgh, Group Editor at Supermarket News, recommended that I contact you for an article that I’m writing for my journalism class. I’m a senior at Georgetown University and I’m writing about grocer’s pricing strategies.
I was wondering if I could interview you over the phone about your experience within the health grocer industry.
Please email me at srt22@georgetown.edu. I look forward to hearing from you in the near future.
Best,
Samantha Trauth

I have been a huge fan of MOMs for many years now and am a dedicated and loyal customer….but I must take exception to your opinion of Rush fans for I have been a Rush fan for even longer than I have been a MOMs fan and I am not a nerd. In fact, I am one of the coolest people who has ever walked the planet. And although you are a nerd, there’s still hope for you. Remember, changes aren’t permanent but change is…
